DUGWAY, Utah – Weather and site conditions permitting, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn prescribed burn
A prescribed burn is the controlled use of fire to restore wildlife habitat, reduce wildfire risk, or achieve other habitat management goals. We have been using prescribed burn techniques to improve species habitat since the 1930s.

Learn more about prescribed burn
in the Harrison Unit at Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge during October 2026, which will result in a temporary closure.

Visitors and hunters should not approach the burn area, fire crews, or equipment. The remainder of the refuge will remain open, and public hunting access outside the Harrison Unit is not expected to be affected. Smoke may be visible for several miles beyond the refuge perimeter, and people in the surrounding area may smell smoke.

Interagency fire crews will participate in the prescribed burn. The burn will reduce accumulated vegetation and dense stands of invasive Phragmites, improve access and visibility, and prepare the unit for continued habitat management.
