About This Position

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is searching for energetic Environmental Education Park Ranger volunteers to help with the Refuge’s field trip program and other educational programming.


Purpose:

The Environmental Education Park Ranger will focus on presenting educational and interpretive information to visitors of all ages. Depending on interest and availability, the Environmental Education Park Ranger may work with Refuge staff or with the Friends of the Bear River Refuge to help create and conduct presentations to general visitors, student groups, and educators while at the Refuge, at the Outdoor Nature Explore Classroom, and during special events at the Refuge and in the community.

Qualifications:

· Ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically with members of the public of all ages.

· Have a strong interest in natural resources and conservation.

· Must have a positive attitude.

· Ideal for experienced educators or presenters, or for those wishing to become educators.

Requirements:

· Complete necessary administrative paperwork (Volunteer Service Agreement, Position Description, Job Hazard Analysis, etc.).

· Wear provided volunteer uniform while performing duties.

· Report observed violations to appropriate staff. Do not perform law enforcement duties.

· Represent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in a professional manner.

· Record volunteer hours in binder at the Front Desk.

· May be required to undergo a general background investigation and an additional level of investigation to work with children.


Duties and Responsibilities:

· Assist Visitor Services staff with prepping content and materials for programs as well as for on-Refuge and off-Refuge events.

· Help plan special events, such as Owl, Eagle, and Swan Days.

· Help lead field trips for visiting school groups. Field trips for all ages occur throughout the year.

· Lead tours, upon scheduled request, such as family tours at the Visitor Center or nature walks on the trails.


Hours and Time Commitment:

The Visitor Center’s Hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Visitor Center is closed on Sunday and Monday as well as all Federal Holidays.

Hours and days of the week may vary with the schedule of field trips and other events.


Training Required:

The Environmental Education Park Ranger must complete environmental education training before the Environmental Education Park Ranger may serve as a tour guide and presenter for special events. Training will cover topics such as the mission, history, and management of the Refuge, the flora and fauna at the Refuge, and the role of the Refuge as part of the GSL ecosystem. Moreover, training regarding interpretation techniques for all ages will be given.

Use of a government vehicle may be required while on duty. All volunteers must complete the appropriate driving forms and Defensive Driving training to be allowed to drive a government vehicle.
